It all started in 1902 when the first automobile industry entered the market. It was lead by Komanosuke Uchiyama. The first car included a gasoline engine. The engine was originally exported from the United States. This makes the car a hybrid of Japanese and American technology. 1904 witnessed the manufacturing of the first Japanese bus. A well-functioning steam engine was used to power this vehicle. Nearly10 passengers could ride this bus. In 1907, the first car was made that was entirely Japanese. It did not contain any parts exported from other countries. 1914 came with another big news when Mitsubishi Zosen introduced Model A to the world. It was another big hit in the automobile industry. These new cars were nearly all made following the designs and trends of the western world.

These thirty years saw a drastic change in the automobile market. In the 1930s American car manufacturers started introducing their cars to the Japanese market. Soon, they succeeded in curbing the domestic manufacturers. When local Japanese car manufacturers were only able to produce 500 units, American car manufacturers produced 20,000 of them. The Japanese government introduced

This intense monopoly was broken by the Japanese government. In 1936 they introduced the Automobile Manufacturing Industries Act to the market. This act led to the formation of Toyota and Datsun. They are still known around the world as reliable car manufacturers.

After World War 2, It became necessary to disband many companies. However, after a while, the Japanese government realized the importance of the domestic car market and took initiatives to accelerate the progress. The government urged local car manufacturers to manufacture new high-efficient, small and affordable vehicles. 1955 came with the news of new models of Suzuki and Mitsubishi cars in the market. Toyota and Mazda also introduced a new model to the market in the 1960s.

The government introduced the Japanese Automotive Manufacturer’s Association (JAMA) in 1967. JAMA assisted the car manufacturers in dealing with the continuously arising problems with the changing economy. The technical advances took a huge leap when Japanese manufacturers started introducing better automation in car production. They manufactured cars with digital technology, robots, and other impressive new technology and techniques. The car purchase increased drastically by 1975 when more than 50% of all the households in Japan owned cars. The newfound success and finances led to the innovation of new and better technology. This soon resulted in the creation of a new rotary engine by Toyo Kogyo.  Since the 1950s, Japanese cars were focused on manufacturing fuel-efficient small engines. Therefore, they were welcomed during the time of the Oil Crisis of 1973 when the rest of the world was facing problems.

To go along with the increased focus on global warming, pollution, and other related issues, the automakers started making their vehicles recyclable. By 1985, it became possible to recycle approximately 75% of a Japanese vehicle. There was also an increased emphasis on better safety measures.
